Brief
Choose an animal and a historic era, preferably something with very distinct characteristics, and create a composition in the style of a Saturday Evening Post Magazine cover. This is an opportunity for character design and visual storytelling.
Rationale
I chose to depict an elephant as a Japanese samurai because elephants are often a symbol of strength, power, and wisdom, everything a samurai should stand for. But in modern media, elephants are usually characterized as heavy-footed, slow, and cowardly, the complete opposite of a samurai. I felt like this contrast would make an interesting character, building some interest in how this elephant got in the position to become a samurai. The colors and textures I chose are inspired by traditional Japanese woodblock prints, which include bright colors like the ones on my character’s armor. The linework in my drawing also mimics the woodblock prints' fine lining and gritty texture.
